Tim Bishop’s The Persistent Road is an engaging read that draws you in from the very beginning.
As is common when faced with grief and loss, Doug Zimmer must cycle through the regrets he is left with when everything of purpose in his life is lost to him. With more twists and turns than the Snake River Canyon winding through the Tetons, the author mirrors the perilous edge of sanity and Doug’s tenuous grasp on it with enthralling descriptions and details about the adventures of cycling the Pacific Northwest.
There were unsightly moments in Doug’s grief that I did not want to be a witness to. But isn’t that true of every human unraveling and those who are close enough to witness it? This author remained true to his character, bringing him to life with all of his scars and gaping wounds. And though I do not cycle, and have never been to the Pacific Northwest, the setting and scene came alive at the hands of a gifted artist who knows to write what he loves and love what he writes.
Anyone who came to a personal relationship with Jesus in later years will recognize the cast along the journey. They have played roles in our own tales.

The emotional stakes are high in this story. At what point does broken become shattered beyond repair?
The physical stakes are high in this story. Man against nature. Man against beast. Man against himself.
The spiritual stakes in the story are high. In fact, they are eternal. As it is with all of us, it all comes down to Doug and the choices he will make.
