My Story

It all began with a mean teacher and an argumentative squirrel.

In the 6th grade, my reading teacher assigned the class to write a poem about an animal. I devised the very clever (to me) “Never Quarrel With A Squirrel.” It was so clever (to me), that I couldn’t read it without grinning (and sometimes laughing quite hard). I might also share that although I spent some early years in speech, I still had a lisp. Anyway, the class was not amused by my rendition of this clever little ditty, and neither was my teacher. She gave me a big fat F in red ink and circled it twice.

But I had so loved writing the poem, that (undeterred)  I wrote another one about a small, injured bird we found in our yard. Undaunted by the teacher’s rude grading system, I showed her my second poem. First, she insisted I had not penned the rhyme. When I assured her I most certainly had, she
proceeded to write a big red A+ on it and tear up the first poem before I could protest. (This is where I learned to make copies to turn in.)

I don’t remember anything about the first poem except the title and the glee with which I recited it. I can probably still recite the second if I tried. And I have been writing ever since.

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
